Inlayed Pearl Bird and Silver Wire Branch Tuxedo Gentleman's Knife. This is an elegant small gentleman's pocket knife. Sheffield was active in the 1850's and later became Martin and Hall. They seemed to have made a speciality of the "inter-frame" design for embedding "precious" materials within the nickel silver knife frame itself. In this case, silver wire as a branch, six pearl or Abalone shell fragments, denoting leaves, and a bird shaped piece on the branch mid way, all embedded in tortoise shell. The blades show wear and sharpening, combined with the patina of age. But they all snap open and closed.
